Change the delimiter in a CSV

For adapting a file to the rules of a spreadsheet, database or partner, CSV Separator Converter replaces the delimiter before handoff.

Switch a CSV delimiter between comma, semicolon, tab and pipe without rebuilding the file by hand. You get the result directly in your browser.

How to use

  1. Hand your file to the page by dropping it in, or paste the content if you only have a short extract to work on.
  2. State the separator used at the start, or leave automatic detection on when you hesitate between candidates.
  3. Pick the separator that the receiving spreadsheet, database or partner expects at the other end.
  4. Run the conversion and read the first lines of the produced table to check the columns land where they should.
  5. Save the result under a clear name so the original and the converted version never get mixed up.

Example

A partner asks for fields separated by semicolons, while your own export uses commas. After the conversion, open the result in a spreadsheet and confirm that each column sits in the right place before you send the file on.

Limits and formats

Where processing happens

The conversion runs in your browser: the file you drop in stays on your device and no copy is retained after the page closes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out which separator the source uses?

Open the file in a text editor and look at the character that repeats between values on the first line. If two candidates look equally likely, let automatic detection try and compare the opening columns of the produced table.

What happens to commas inside addresses?

They are part of the content and need to be wrapped in quotes in the source file so they are not mistaken for separators. If the output shows extra columns, missing quotes are usually the reason.

Can I convert a file with thousands of rows?

The work is done in the browser, so the memory of your own device is what matters most. On a very large file the page can slow down; split it into parts and convert them one after another instead.
