Turn a color image into grayscale

For creators who need a color-free version before printing, composing a layout or comparing visual treatments.

Strip color from an image and get a balanced grayscale result for a layout, print job or restrained visual effect without rebuilding the asset.

How to use

  1. Select a PNG, JPEG or WebP image to convert, keeping it within the 20 MB limit.
  2. Load the file into the tool; no color choices are needed for this operation.
  3. Run the conversion to remove color information and produce a grayscale result.
  4. Compare the output with the original, because some contrasts may look different once hue is gone.
  5. Download the black-and-white version if it suits your layout, print job or publication.

Example

A designer is preparing a print catalog that will be produced in black and white. They convert a color photo to grayscale, check that textures and faces remain readable, and place the resulting file into the layout.

Where processing happens

The grayscale conversion runs in your browser on the image you selected. Nothing is sent out for processing, so the black-and-white file is created locally and your original color image stays unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Can I restore the colors after conversion?

No, the removed color information cannot be recreated exactly from the grayscale file. Keep a copy of the original color image if you may want to use it again later.

Why do some colors look the same in gray?

Each hue is converted into a brightness value. Two colors with different hues can have similar luminance, so they may appear almost identical once the color is removed.

Can I make the result more contrasty?

Not with this tool, which applies a direct grayscale conversion without a contrast control. Use a separate editing tool afterward if you need to adjust levels or contrast.
