Calculate the mean, median and range

With Statistical summary, students, teachers and analysts can verify a calculation during study or analysis. Calculate the mean, median and range.

Calculate the mean, median and range. The tool is free in your browser and shows the result without asking you to create an account.

How to use

  1. Paste your list of numbers, separated by spaces, commas or line breaks.
  2. Import a text or CSV file when your data already lives in a document.
  3. Run the analysis to display the mean, the median and the range.
  4. Compare the mean with the median, because a clear gap often points to extreme values.

Example

The sample is a short series of six numbers. After analysing it, look at the distance between the mean and the median: when the mean sits well above the median, one or two high values are pulling the result upwards.

Input

4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

Limits and formats

Where processing happens

Your data is handled inside the browser and nowhere else: nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and the analysis behaves the same whether your list holds a handful of values or a much longer series of measurements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean adds every value and divides by the count. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted. With a few very high or very low numbers, the median often describes the typical value better.

Can I paste data that includes units?

It is safer to remove units and symbols first. The tool reads numbers, and a label stuck to a figure can stop that value from being read correctly.

Is the range enough to describe my data?

Not on its own. Two lists can share the same range while being spread very differently. Add the mean and the median to get a more balanced picture of the series.
